Pregnancy & Chiropractic Care

Many do not understand the painful symptoms and difficulties with your body while pregnant. As a mother of two, Dr. Joanne Therriault, D.C., can relate. Chiropractic is safe and effective in helping expecting mothers. We help relieve common pelvic, mid-back, and sciatic pains attributed to the pressures on the spine during the baby’s growth.

Our office utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and technology to treat pregnant patients from the beginning to the end of their pregnancy. Dr. Joanne Therriault, D.C., also attends pregnancy seminars to further her knowledge in caring for pregnant patients to the best of her ability.

Preventing a Breech In a Pregnancy

One of our biggest fears when pregnant is that the baby will be in a breech or transverse position when it is time to deliver. Few obstetricians will birth a baby breech because of the risks; therefore, a cesarean section is scheduled.

Dr. Joanne Therriault, D.C., extended her training to help mothers whose babies are in a breech or transverse presentation by becoming certified in the Webster technique. This gentle chiropractic technique involves assessing and correcting misalignments in the pelvic and lower back area.

The Webster technique is so gentle it is worth the try versus having to have a c-section. Dr. Joanne Therriault, D.C. is trained to adjust babies, children, and adolescents utilizing a gentle approach allowing her to help many with ear infections, allergies, adhd, and sports injuries. In fact, she often encourages parents to have their children checked for problems throughout the stages of development (holding head up, crawling, walking) and definitely after a major fall, or any trauma to ensure proper nerve function is never compromised via spinal misalignment.

Techniques We Specialize In

Manual Technique

Chiropractors use manual therapy as a physical treatment to reduce pain and debility. This hands-on approach takes advantage of the joints’ natural ability for self-healing by applying pressure on muscle tissue, maneuvering them effectively so they can release tension from tight muscles or stiff joints, which cause discomfort in our bodies.

There are endless benefits to how manual therapy can help improve your overall wellness. Manual therapy is an excellent way to increase your range of motion, decrease soft tissue inflammation and pain, and heal your contractile and non-contractile tissue.

What types of movement does this technique improve?

Joint health is essential to our overall well-being and satisfaction in life. The manual technique helps improve three types of movement, including manipulation, massage, and mobilization. Manipulation is the rotational, agitated force that results in an audible popping sound by the sudden breakdown of gas bubbles. Massage is a recurring stripping, kneading, or rubbing of the soft tissues to relax muscles, increase circulation, and reduce pain. Mobilization is stretching the soft tissues more slowly to improve flexibility.

Mobilization and manipulation go hand in hand. They use calculated movements of various speeds (slow to fast), force (moderate to strong), and distances to pull, rotate or thrust joints and bones into position to help release stiff tissues around the joint, minimize joint pain, and reestablish alignment and assist with flexibility.

What are the types of manual therapy techniques?

  1. Soft Tissue Mobilization a manual therapy treatment where the therapist applies a variety of pressures and stretches to the muscles and fascia.
breaks up hard or rubbery muscle tissue
    circulates tissue fluids
    restores normal texture to tissue
    reduces pain
  2. Strain and Counter-Strain is a manual therapy technique that treats muscles and joint pain using only the hands. It works hard to fix irregular neuromuscular reflexes that trigger structural and postural problems.
  3. Joint Mobilization loosens the constrained joint and boosts the range of motion by delivering slow speed and amped-up movement distance.
  4. Muscle Energy Technique is designed to improve musculoskeletal function through mobilizing joints and stretching muscles and fascia. This technique works by using voluntary contractions of the patient’s muscles against a defined counter force implemented by the chiropractor.
  5. High Velocity, Low Amplitude Thrusting restores joint function. This technique can be a bit more aggressive by employing a rapid use of force over a short duration, distance, or rotational area of a joint to employ the restrictive barrier.

Drop-Table Technique

The “drop” approach uses a unique chiropractic table in order to have gravity aid an adjustment. The table has segments that can be lifted up and then dropped when the chiropractor applies a thrust. The number of sessions needed depends on the type of condition the patient has and its severity. However, the patient should generally have a better range of motion and less pain with each treatment.

Webster Technique

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy is helpful to the physiological function of both the mother and baby throughout pregnancy and birth. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and adjustment. It helps improve misalignments in the pelvis and lower back areas. This technique helps keep ligaments and muscles supporting the uterus functioning at peak performance.

The Webster technique does not involve moving the baby, as with the external version procedure, and is safe. Although the Webster Technique has a very high success rate of 75-95%, there are many other reasons, besides pelvic misalignments and tension on the uterus, which cause breech presentations, some of which cannot be reversed. However, this technique is so gentle it is worth the try versus having a c-section.

NUCCA Technique

Precision Spinal Care utilizes state-of-the-art technology, x-rays, and mathematical analysis to provide the NUCCA process. The NUCCA process uses years of clinical research to correct the Atlas Subluxation Complex. By using an exact, gentle, non-invasive spinal adjusting technique, we can help alleviate pain from the craniocervical junction (head and neck).

Gonstead Technique

Every chiropractic case presents a different combination of misaligned vertebrae. An integral part of the Gonstead Technique is the ability to recognize and correct these misalignments through understanding the body. This technique works with the foundation of your spine, the lower spine and pelvis. When the foundation, the pelvic girdle or any of the vertebrae, become tilted or rotated out of their proper position, compressed or pinched nerves can arise, causing pain.

Pinpointing misaligned vertebrae in the upper portion of the vertebrae in the spine are easily recognized, but often the true pain is coming from the tougher-to-spot misalignments of the lower portions of the spine. If just the top misaligned vertebrae are adjusted, it only gives half of the relief. Precision Spinal Care utilizes the Gonstead Technique to ensure we get to the root of the pain and through manipulation and adjustments, created a tailor made program to restore your body’s normal position.

The Palmer Package

First developed by Dr. D.D. Palmer (the founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic) in 1897, the Diversified Chiropractic Technique (DCT) involves application of a short and quick thrust over restricted joints to help restore normal range of motion in the joint. The primary objectives of the Palmers Package are to restore spinal alignment, repair joint dysfunction, and enhance proper movement.

Activator Method

When using the Activator Method, a spring-loaded, hand-held mechanical instrument called the Activator allows chiropractors to provide a quick, low-force impulse at specific points. The Activator instrument is able to provide controlled force and high speed. The theoretical advantages include the lack of muscle resistance when using this technique may facilitate its effectiveness and that the controlled force doesn’t put joints in any compromised positions.

Therapies We Utilize

Chiropractic Care in Prescott, AZ | Precision Spinal Care LLC

Myofascial Release

If you suffer from chronic muscle, back, and neck pain, your myofascial tissue may be stiffened and need help. When myofascial tissue becomes stiff, it may restrict joint and muscle movement, causing extreme pain.

Our chiropractors create an individualized care plan in which we uncover trigger points and stretch them to release tension. This technique involves stretching and applying manual pressure to tight areas of the myofascial tissue.
